As the 2024 FIVB Nations League approaches, the Turkish Volleyball Federation held a morale-boosting night in Istanbul, uniting players, coaches, and officials in a strong display of confidence and national pride.
Federation President Mehmet Akif Üstündağ opened the evening with a passionate message.
“We’re at the beginning of a long, challenging season with the Sultans and the Efes,” he said, referring to the women’s and men’s teams. “Our goal remains unchanged—to consistently reach the podium in both categories.”
With the Women’s World Championship set to take place in Thailand and the men competing in the Philippines, Üstündağ emphasized the strength of Türkiye’s young and talented squads. He highlighted the need for continuity as veteran players step aside and new faces rise.
“We’re proud to have one of the youngest teams in global volleyball,” he noted. “We are achieving success on the court, off the court, and in development. As the head of this family, I’m extremely proud.”
Üstündağ also celebrated the achievements of Turkish clubs in Europe, pointing to Halkbank’s Final Four finish in the CEV Champions League and Ziraat Bankkart’s CEV Cup victory.
However, he did express concern about an injury to star player Adis Lagumdzija, who will miss the opening stage of the Nations League.
“It’s the only dark cloud today,” he said. “But our squad depth will carry us through.”
Looking ahead to home games, Üstündağ confirmed that the Istanbul leg of the Women’s Nations League will be held at the Sinan Erdem Dome. After that, the team will continue in the Netherlands.
“Everywhere is Türkiye,” he added. “Our fans will follow us there too.”
Men’s national team head coach Umut Çakır spoke next, expressing long-term goals.
“We’ve started preparations in Ankara and tested ourselves against the Dutch,” he said. “It’s a long road to the 2028 Olympics, but we’re building a wide squad with real belief. Expect a team that fights for every point.”
Captain Murat Yenipazar praised the morale event, saying it brought new energy to the team as they prepare for the tournament.
On the women’s side, head coach Daniele Santarelli was upbeat.
“The team is hungry and focused,” he said. “My staff—both Turkish and Italian—works in full harmony. These players are not afraid of hard work, and they don’t accept defeat.”
Women’s team captain Simge Aköz shared the same determination.
“We’re ready,” she said. “We’re coming off a strong season and we want to win the Nations League again, then aim for the World Championship. Winning once only makes you hungrier.”
Aköz also reflected on recent changes at her club, Eczacıbaşı Dynavit.
“It’s hard to say goodbye to teammates, but that’s part of professional sports,” she said. “I’ll miss them a lot.”
Young setter Elif Şahin said their recent training camp in Italy helped the team understand areas to improve.
“It was a valuable process. We’re excited, just like every year,” she said.
Middle blocker Aslı Kalaç ended the evening with a promise.
“Our journey always starts with one goal—reaching the final and lifting the trophy,” she said. “It’s thrilling to play a national match in Istanbul again. We just ask the fans to come and support us.”
